SUMMARY:UBERFest: Death Valley 2024 - Full - Registration Closed
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest: Death Valley 2024\nWednesday\, December 18 – Sunday\, December 22\nPre-registration for this event is now closed. Participants have been notified by email if they have been selected by the lottery system. \nThis event is now by invitation only. Anyone not selected by lottery will be placed on a wait list and notified as space becomes available. \nWelcome to the 2024 Death Valley UBERFest\, a gathering of canyoneers from near and far who wish to explore the canyons and natural beauty of Death Valley National Park. There are significant changes to the way this Fest is being organized\, including a pre-registration process\, so please read all of the event information. \nWhat’s the purpose of an UBERFest?  The obvious answer to that question is to have fun descending beautiful canyons\, but those of you who have attended these events in the past know that there’s so much more going on. This festival will include workshops\, a Park Ranger talk\, a full meal on Saturday night\, and much more. UBER Adventures hosts these festivals and plans activities with the following objectives in mind: \n\nEducation and Skill Development: Provide opportunities for participants to learn and enhance their canyoneering and leadership skills.\nEnvironmental Stewardship: Foster a sense of responsibility for the preservation of the natural environment where canyoneering takes place. Promote Leave No Trace principles and sustainable practices.\nCommunity Building: Create a sense of community among canyoneers\, allowing participants to network\, share experiences\, and build connections with like-minded individuals.\nSafety Awareness: Emphasize the importance of safety in canyoneering.\nInclusivity: Foster an inclusive and diverse environment\, encouraging people of all ages\, backgrounds\, and skill levels to participate in the festival.\nFun and Recreation: Provide a platform for participants to enjoy the thrill of canyoneering in a festive and supportive atmosphere.\nPartnerships: Collaborate with outdoor organizations\, governmental agencies\, and others to enhance the overall success and impact of the festival.\n\nTHE EVENT\nAs canyoneering is an inherently dangerous activity\, this event is only open to those with professional canyoneering training or significant canyoneering experience. Priority registration will be given to those who have completed an UBER Adventures course within the last 3 years or who volunteer and are accepted to lead canyons during the event. If you have never taken an UBER Adventures course or have never attended an UBERFest before\, you must call and speak to me directly for permission to attend before registering. \n\nThe event is limited to 60 participants.\nWe will be using a pre-registration process for this event. Participants will be selected by random lottery if pre-registration exceeds 60 people.\nPre-registration will be open until October 18th.\nWhen pre-registration closes\, participants chosen by lottery will be notified by email and will be provided a unique code to register for the event. To register for the event\, you will have one week to respond to the email notification. If you have not registered within 1 week\, I will assume you do not plan to attend and will release the space to the next individuals on the list.\nOnce you have registered\, you will receive a link to the event spreadsheet with all of the details of the event.\n\nCOST: There are 2 registration options. If you would like to stay at the tent-only group site at Furnace Creek Campground\, the fee is $45. If you plan to arrange your own accommodations\, the fee is $35.  (NOTE: Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.) Also\, remember that this is a National Park\, so you will need a National Parks Pass (one for each car entering the park) or you will have to pay the park entry fee. \n   \nCANYONEERING IN DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK\nUBER Adventures has obtained a Special Recreational Use Permit from Death Valley National Park for this festival to ensure a successful event for everyone. This means that the event will be more structured than in the past in order to abide by campground and park rules and regulations. To participate in this event\, you must read and agree to follow all campground and park rules and regulations by signing a participant agreement. Anyone who violates campground or park rules will be removed from all group activities for the remainder of the festival and may be banned from future events. \nTHE CANYONS: There are a number of different mountain ranges in Death Valley with a variety of canyons to fit all skill levels. AND – permits are not required to descend canyons here. Bolting is not allowed in the park\, so this is the perfect place to hone your natural anchor building skills. Bring your A-game! \nCANYON GROUPS: We will have canyon roster / sign-up sheets at the group campsite. \nPARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES: You are responsible for making informed decisions about the canyon trips you choose to join\, both ahead of time and on the day of the trip. You are responsible for supplying your own personal canyon gear and familiarizing yourself with the canyon beta. You should be prepared to be an active team member of each group you join (no passengers). You are responsible for contributing to a welcoming and respectful space throughout the event. This includes respecting camp rules\, treating the campground with respect\, and following Leave No Trace principles and practices. The following behaviors are prohibited and will result in the removal of the individual who committed the behavior from the remaining canyon rosters of the event: sexual or other forms of harassment\, the use of illegal drugs or other substances\, and the use of alcohol or marijuana while in canyon. \nTRANSPORTATION: You are responsible for providing your own transportation to and from the event as well as getting to the canyons. All canyons are accessible via passenger vehicles. Please try to carpool to the event as parking space is somewhat limited. Two-three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and shuttling to the canyons. \nWEATHER: The average high/low for this time of year is 65°/38°\, making it the perfect time to explore these canyons! \nBETA: Start thinking about which canyons you’d like to descend and/or lead. \nRopewiki: Death Valley National Park – ropewiki\nBluuGnome: BluuGnome.com – Canyoneering Route Descriptions for Death Valley National Park\, California. \n \nTHE CAMPGROUND (BASECAMP)\nTHE GROUP CAMPSITE:  I’ve reserved group site #2 at Furnace Creek Campground for a maximum of 40 people. The group campground is for tent camping only with limited vehicle parking. The campground accommodations include water\, flush toilets\, picnic tables\, and fire pits/grills. We can accommodate up to 40 people\, but only 10 cars at the site! \nThe Group Campsite will also lend itself for all group activities including gathering for ridesharing\, meals\, the potluck\, games and especially\, CAMARADERIE!  Because we will always want to get a super early start for our canyons and morning shuttles\, our evenings at the group campsite will end early so people can get their sleep. \nThe campground also has RV spaces and individual tent sites available. If you want to go that route\, you may be able to reserve one on your own. Individual reservations at Furnace Creek are now open. Stovepipe Wells (first come\, first serve)\, Texas Springs\, Sunset\, and Slabby Acres (free) are other camping options. Or you can splurge and stay at more luxurious accommodations nearby. If this is your choice\, you’ll be responsible for making (and paying for) your own arrangements. \nCAMPGROUND RULES: The following regulations must be strictly followed: \n\nQuiet Hours: 10:00 pm – 7:00 am\nGenerator Hours: 7:00 am – 7:00 pm (Do not leave generators running unattended.)\nFood/Trash: Unattended food\, garbage or cooking equipment must be sealed in a vehicle or solid container.\nCampfires: No wood gathering. Fires only in NPS grates as provided. Fires must not be left smoldering or unattended. No trash in fire grate.\nDriving: Observe speed limits and one-way signs in the campground.\nAdditional services such as showers\, pool\, and laundry facilities are available for a fee nearby at privately owned Furnace Creek Ranch\n\nCAMPING GEAR and FOOD: You are responsible for providing your own camping gear/supplies and food – – except – we will absolutely do a POTLUCK on Saturday evening between 5:00-9:00 pm.  Bring something delicious to share. This might also be the time for us to have movie night and an awesome campfire (weather permitting)\, so bring some firewood! In addition\, there are a variety of shops and restaurants nearby. \n

As cancellations come in\, names will be taken off the waitlist in the order they were received.\n\nCOST: The fee for this event is $95/person and includes 4 nights of tent camping at a private campground. Tent sites at the event campground are booked full. To attend the event\, you will need to register (the fee is $75) and make arrangements for your own accommodations. The fee includes workshops\, Saturday evening meal (bring your own beverages)\, hot bottomless coffee provided every morning by 6am\, and some cool swag. You may also put your name on the waitlist for tent space at the event campground.  (NOTE: Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.) Also\, remember that this is a National Park\, so you will need a National Parks Pass (one for each car entering the park) or you will have to pay the park entry fee. \n\nCANYONEERING IN CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK\nUBER Adventures has obtained a Special Recreational Use Permit from Capitol Reef National Park for this festival to ensure a successful event for everyone. This means that the event will be more structured than in the past in order to abide by park rules and regulations. This includes acquiring the required Day-Use permits for technical canyoneering and observing group size limits and numbers in the canyons. By participating in this event\, you are agreeing to follow all park rules and regulations. Anyone who violates park rules will be removed from all group activities for the remainder of the festival. \nPARK CANYONEERING REGULATIONS: \nPermits: Permits are required for canyoneering in the park. Permits are free. If you descend more than one canyon in a day\, you will need a permit for each canyon. Do not get your own permits. We will have special permits for this event\, and we will provide them for you at basecamp. \nGroup and size limits: We are limited to one group in each canyon per day. Group size is also limited but varies depending on the canyon. While this might seem somewhat limiting\, there are over 25 canyons in the park to choose from\, so there will be plenty of choices for everyone. \nFor more information on park regulations\, go to the Capitol Reef National Park website here. \nCANYON GROUPS: We will have canyon roster / sign-up sheets at basecamp (the pavilion). There will be one sheet for each canyon for each day of the festival. All canyons are accessible via passenger vehicles. Please try to carpool to the event as parking space is somewhat limited. Two-three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and shuttling to the canyons. \nCAMPING GEAR and FOOD: You are responsible for providing your own camping gear/supplies and food – EXCEPT we will provide a full meal on Saturday night between 5:00-9:00 pm. Just bring yourselves and your own beverages. There is a restaurant at the campground\, and we will be near the town of Torrey\, which has a variety of shops and restaurants. \nBETA: Start thinking about which canyons you’d like to descend and/or lead. \nhttp://ropewiki.com/Capitol_Reef_National_Park\nhttps://www.roadtripryan.com/go/a/utah/capitol-reef\nhttp://www.bluugnome.com/cyn_route/cap-reef/canyon-routes__cap-reef.aspx \nWEATHER: The average high/low for this time of year is 80°/42°\, making it the perfect time to explore these canyons! \nOTHER ACTIVITIES: The park has awesome hikes\, petroglyph panels\, arches\, technical canyoneering\, visitor’s center and scenic drives! \nTHE CAMPGROUND (BASECAMP)\n\nI’ve reserved all the tent sites at a private campground in Torrey\, 6 miles from Capitol Reef National Park\, for a maximum of 50 people. The campground has water\, fire rings\, picnic tables\, restrooms\, showers\, a pool\, and a restaurant!  It also has a giant pavilion which we have exclusive use of for workshops\, planning canyon trips\, and socializing. A spot at the group campsite is included in your registration fee. Please note\, however\, that space is limited at these sites\, so giant house-sized tents are not permitted. \nThe campground also has RV spaces and cabins available. If you want to go that route\, you’ll be responsible for making (and paying for) your own arrangements at the campground\, and your registration fee will be reduced. You do not need to stay at this campground to attend the event\, but you may find it more convenient to do so. Do not make your own reservations until after your event registration has been confirmed.  \nThousand Lakes RV Park\, Cabins and Campground\n1110 W. SR-24\nTorrey\, UT 84775\n(435) 425-3500 \n  \nVOLUNTEERS NEEDED\nIf you’d like to guarantee your spot at the festival\, consider volunteering in one of the following ways: \n\nBe a canyon leader or assistant leader for 2 or more canyon days during the event. We’ll have brief leadership meetings on Wednesday and Thursday night to make sure you’re up to speed.\nBe a basecamp host. Help with registration or be on duty at least half a day during the event to help with any issues that arise. SUMMARY:UBERFest: Death Valley 2023
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest: Death Valley 2023\nDECEMBER DATES: Wednesday\, December 13 – Sunday\, December 17 \nThe only fee for this 4-day canyoneering extravaganza is a $35/person non-refundable cost-sharing fee\, which includes camping at the Furnace Creek Campground Group Site\, a pot luck\, and some cool swag. Or make arrangements for your own accommodations and the fee is only $15. However\, remember that this is a National Park\, so you will also need a National Parks Pass or pay the park entry fee. \nAs canyoneering is an inherently dangerous activity\, this event is only open to those with professional canyoneering training or significant canyoneering experience.  And\, as this is a social event\, anyone competent/qualified to lead a canyon should plan on helping to lead rookies through some awesome canyons! If you want to go to this event\, get the training and become a competent participant and valuable team member! There are several Uber Adventures Technical Canyoneering Courses (ACE-L1) offered between now and this event. \n   \nTHE CANYONS: There are a number of different mountain ranges in Death Valley with a variety of canyons to fit all skill levels. AND – permits are not required to descend canyons here. \nBolting is not allowed in the park\, so this is the perfect place to hone your natural anchor building skills. Bring your A-game! \nWEATHER: The average high/low for this time of year is 65°/38°\, making it the perfect time to explore these canyons! \n \nSome of the logistics:\nTHE GROUP CAMPSITE:  I’ve reserved group site #2 at Furnace Creek Campground for a maximum of 40 people. Stovepipe Wells (first come\, first serve) and Slabby Acres (free) are other camping options. Or you can splurge and stay at more luxurious accommodations nearby. Contact me for more details. If this is your choice\, you’ll be responsible for making (and paying for) your own arrangements. \nCARPOOL! DO IT!  Two-three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and shuttling to the canyons. \nYou are responsible for your own travel and your own meals – except – we should absolutely do a POTLUCK on Saturday evening at 7:00pm.  Bring something delicious to share. This might also be the time for us to have movie night and an awesome campfire (weather permitting)\, so bring some firewood!

The fee is non-refundable. \n \nPREREQUISITE: Because canyoneering is an inherently dangerous sport\, you must have prior canyoneering experience to attend. If you have not taken Uber Adventures’ Technical Canyoneering Course (ACE-L1) or have equivalent training\, you must contact me directly for authorization to attend this event. \nDISCLAIMER: You will be required to sign a liability release form to attend this event. Canyoneering is a personal choice and requires personal responsibility. Canyoneering and associate activities are dangerous and can result in injury and/or death. Canyoneering exposes you to risks. Risks are not eliminated by training or skill. By your participation in any activity or event\, you accept and assume any and all risks\, including those created by negligence\, connected to such activity or event. If you wish to participate you should be physically and mentally prepared with the appropriate gear. You are responsible for your own safety\, not the person leading the event. You should always be aware of the risks involved in outdoor activities and conduct yourself accordingly. You need to be fully self-sufficient and not rely on anyone for help. \nWe will have sign-up sheets at the campsite to help you organize canyon trips\, and we will help you with appropriate canyon selections. We do not however put the canyon trips together. This is all up to you (the participants) to organize and execute. We cannot guarantee you a place on any canyon trip. Canyon leaders are NOT guides and are not paid. They are just helping with logistics. Who goes on the trip is solely up to them. You MUST be an active participant in the canyon\, carry group gear/ropes\, help with rigging\, bagging rope\, and be completely self-sufficient. \n \nLEADERS: Everyone should be prepared to LEAD at least ONE canyon descent during this event. Do not attend with the intention of everyone else doing all the work! There are several Uber Adventures Technical Canyoneering Courses (ACE-L1) offered throughout the Southwest between now and this event (including one immediately preceding this event in Moab).  If you want to go to this event\, get the training and become a competent participant and valuable team member! \nThere are many canyons to choose from both inside and outside the park. Most canyons in the area are short\, so we’ve put together some combos you could think about! \n\nElephant Butte & Dragonfly\nTierdrop\, Not Tierdrop & U-Turn\nUndercover & MMI\nWinter Camp Slot & Repeat Jr.\nRock of Ages & Camel Toe.\n\nDon’t forget about all the cool things to see in and around the park: Delicate Arch & Wolfe Ranch\, Landscape Arch\, The Fiery Furnace\, the Windows Section\, Park Avenue\, Corona Arch\, etc. When you find yourself done early one day\, plan on doing one of those hikes to enjoy some arches! \nBETA: Be prepared and review beta for the area canyons in advance.\nRoad Trip Ryan: https://www.roadtripryan.com/go/a/utah/moab\nRopewiki: http://ropewiki.com/Moab \n \nARCHES NATIONAL PARK – IMPORTANT INFORMATION \n\nPermits are now required for each canyon route within the park. If you descend more than one canyon in a day\, you will need a permit for each canyon.\nEveryone should thoroughly review the information at the NPS website here https://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/canyoneer.htm\nA timed-entry reservation and ticket are also now required to enter the park between 7am – 4pm. You may enter before 7am or after 4pm without a ticket. Everyone should review that information here. https://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/timed-entry-pilot.htm\nYou also need a park pass to enter the park (either a 7-day pass or an annual pass).\n\nCAMPING: We’ve reserved 2 group campsites near Moab\, UT. Together they will hold 65 people\, but only 20 cars! These 2 campsites each have one fire ring\, a few picnic tables under a covered pavilion and enough room for our tents. There are pit-toilets but no running water. Pickup campers are permitted\, but RVs are not and there are no hook ups. There are a few local options for filling our water jugs and a couple nearby options for pay showers\, along with gear shops\, supermarkets\, and restaurants. We are also only a few miles from the entrance to Arches National Park\, and cell service! If the group campsite fills up\, you may make arrangements for alternative accommodations and still participate in the event. However\, the $60 fee is required whether you camp with us or not. \nCARPOOL!  You are responsible for your own travel; however\, parking at the campsite is limited to 20 vehicles. We recommend that you carpool. Two or three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and shuttling to the canyons.

SUMMARY:UBERFest Zion 2022
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest:  Zion 2022\nWho wants to go to Zion for some real UTAH canyoneering?! \nTo register for this event\, go to the Canyoneering California Meetup page: https://www.meetup.com/canyoneering/events/283951646/ \nThis is a cost-sharing trip. The $35 being collected for this event is a deposit to cover the cost of a group campsite\, permit applications and actual permits. \nHere’s how it works: \n\nIf you choose to camp in the group campsite\, approximately $15 will be deducted from your $35 deposit to cover the cost of the campsite.\nIf you choose to reserve your own campsite\, you will only pay a $20 deposit to cover the cost of canyoneering permits.\nThe cost of group permit applications\, used permits\, and unused permits averages about $5/person/canyon.  If you join on somebody else’s permit\, approximately $5 will be paid from your deposit to the permit holder.  If you are the applicant\, you will receive approximately $5/application from this fund.  If you are the permit-holder\, you will be reimbursed for your actual expenditures from the collected deposits.\nIf you sign-up for the trip and cannot attend\, you will forfeit your deposit as a cancellation fee.\nIf your incurred fees are not covered by the deposit\, we will let you know after the event and you can pay the balance.  If your incurred fees do not add up to your deposit\, you can request a refund or donate it to the Canyoneering California Meetup Group to pay for its monthly dues.  So\, there is no fee for this trip\, just a deposit!\n\nThis event is only open to professionally trained canyoneers (must have taken a Technical Canyoneering Course from a reputable organization) and to canyoneers with SIGNIFICANT CANYONEERING EXPERIENCE (since this is subjective\, if you’d like to attend\, please submit a request including your ‘significant’ canyoneering experience to the event organizer for approval.)  The participants in this event will have the gamut of experience from trained canyoneers doing their first Utah canyons to experienced canyoneers who will be asked to open their trips to accommodate some of our newest graduates/rookies\, and take them through some awesome\, yet friendly\, canyons! \nThere are several Canyoneering Courses offered between now and this event.  If you want to go\, get the required training and become a competent participant and valuable team member! \n           \nSome of the logistics:\nTHE GROUP CAMPSITE:  We’re providing a large group campsite which will hold up to 40 people\, so we will only be taking 40 reservations. Because the response to UBERFest Capitol Reef was so overwhelming\, we will hold the first 20 reservations open for people who a) did not get a chance to attend UBERFest Capitol Reef\, and b) have completed an Uber Adventures course. \nOPTION 2: When the group campsite fills up\, and/or if you want your own campsite\, try to get one close to Group Site E004 and share it with your carpool-mate or another car!  If this is your choice\, you’ll be responsible for making (and paying for) your own camping arrangements at the Watchman Campground in Zion NP.  If you reserve your own campsite\, you will only pay a $20 deposit for the event to cover the cost of canyoneering permits. Please notify me if you choose this option. Reservations for Watchman Campground individual sites operate on a 6-month rolling basis. You can begin making reservations for an individual site now. Go to the recreation.gov site. DO NOT get another group campsite at the Watchman. It is against Park rules for 2 group campsites to be reserved by people affiliated with each other. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to attend this event\, you must register for it whether you stay at the group campsite or make your own arrangements. Details on how to pay your deposit will be provided once your reservation is confirmed. \nCars will NOT be allowed to park at the group campsite.  The parking spaces will be empty and available for picking-up/dropping-off your ride-sharing canyoneers and gear.  ALL cars will need to be parked in overflow parking or at the visitor’s center\, which is a 3 minute walk away!  The Group Campsite will also lend itself for all group activities including facilitating canyon changes\, gathering for ride-sharing\, meals\, the potluck\, games and especially\, CAMARADERIE!  Because we will always want to get a super early start for our canyons and morning shuttles\, our evenings at the group campsite will end early so people can get their sleep. \nCARPOOL!  DO IT!   Two-three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and the fact that there will likely be car shuttles required for some of the canyons. \nYou’re also responsible for the park entry fee\, your own travel\, and your own meals .. except\, we will absolutely DO A POTLUCK  at 6:30pm on Saturday evening – picnic-type food!  i.e.: pasta salad\, burgers\, sausages\, potato salad\, coleslaw\, hot dogs\, buns\, chips\, salsa\, salads\, beer\, wine\, jello\, your family favorite! Plan on bringing a main course\, salad\, or side dish to feed 2-4 people (not enough to feed an army – that’s not necessary!)\, and the means with which to cook/heat it up/serve it (if required). Also\, you are responsible for your own plate\, cup\, utensils\, etc. \n     \nEveryone should try to get permits for something (the more we apply for\, the more likely we will have options for everyone!)  Plan on getting permits for 6-12 people (depending on the canyon)\, otherwise it’s difficult to split up into tiny groups.  For days that we have no permits\, there are several canyons surrounding the park that we can descend with no permit required.  These are some of the canyons you should try to get permits for (READ THE BETA before you apply!):  Subway\, Das Boot\, Pine Creek\, Keyhole\, Middle Echo\, Spry\, Mystery\, Behunin\, Telephone\, Lower Refrigerator\, Englestead\, Orderville … wooohooo!! … several of these require wetsuits which can be reserved and rented (along with Canyoneering shoes) from Zion Adventure Company. http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/canyoneeringpermits.htm \nOnce you are awarded any permit\, please DO NOT POST THEM ON HERE!  Send me a private e-mail and I will help distribute people appropriately and/or we will have sign-up sheets at the group campsite.

This campsite has water\, fire rings\, picnic tables\, restrooms and showers!  This campground cannot accommodate MANSION tents unless there are 2-3 people sharing it! \nThe Group Campsite will also lend itself for all group activities including gathering for ride-sharing\, meals\, the potluck\, games and especially\, CAMARADERIE!  Because we will always want to get a super early start for our canyons and morning shuttles\, our evenings at the group campsite will end early so people can get their sleep. \nThe campground also has RV spaces and cabins available. If you want to go that route\, contact me directly and I’ll give you the information. Also\, if the group campsite fills up or if you want your own campsite\, you may be able to reserve one on your own at the same campground. Again\, contact me for details. If this is your choice\, you’ll be responsible for making (and paying for) your own camping arrangements at the campground. \nCARPOOL!  DO IT!  Two-three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and shuttling to the canyons. \nYou are responsible for your own travel\, and your own meals – except – we should absolutely DO A POTLUCK on Saturday evening at 7:00pm.  Bring something delicious to share .. this might also be the time for us to have an awesome campfire (wind permitting); so bring some firewood! \nCAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK: This is a National Park so you will need a National Parks Pass or pay the park entry fee – no exceptions.  Permits are now required for recreational canyoneering in the park. \nWe are communicating with the Park Rangers to make sure we comply with park rules and regulations. This includes acquiring the required Day-Use permits for technical canyoneering and observing group size limits and numbers in the canyons. As an organization\, we cannot exceed the determined number of people in the same canyon or the same route on the same day. DO NOT apply for permits before the event. We will form groups and take care of permits at the campsite. If there is a canyon you want to lead\, send me a private message\, and we will help distribute people appropriately. We will have sign-up sheets at the group campsite. \nCANYONEERING IN THE PARK: For the protection of park resources\, canyoneering groups are limited to 12 persons per group in the following technical canyons: \n\nCassidy Arch Canyon\nThe Wives: 1\,2\,3\,4\,5 & 6\nOld School\nBeaver Bay\nNa-Gah\nArch Nemesis\n\nCanyoneering groups are limited to 8 persons per group in all technical canyons not listed in the 12 person areas. \nCapitol Reef is a clean canyoneering area. Minimum impact techniques that do not damage or destroy rock or other park resources are required: \n\nThe installation of new fixed anchors (bolts\, pitons\, etc.) is prohibited.\nBolts may be replaced only if an existing bolt is unsafe.\nThe use of power drills is prohibited.\nWhere it is necessary to leave or replace existing webbing\, the webbing should be black or closely match the color of the surrounding rock.\nProtection may not be placed with the use of a hammer except to replace existing belay and rappel anchors and bolts on existing routes\, or for emergency self-rescue.\nPhysical alteration of rock faces is prohibited\, such as chiseling\, glue reinforcement of existing holds\, trundling rocks\, and gluing of new holds.\nIt is prohibited to wrap webbing or rope\, or rappel off any arch with an opening greater than three feet.\n\nTHE CANYONS in this region are terrific – from beginner friendly to long and arduous .. WOOHOO!! There are a variety of options for canyoneering from easy 2-hour canyons to full-day wet advanced canyons with significant challenges! Here’s a link to get you started: http://bluugnome.com/cyn_route/cap-reef/canyon-routes__cap-reef.aspx (nb: measure your ropes; some of the canyons have drops of exactly 200′ and a 200′ rope eventually shrinks to 180′ .. don’t come up short!) \n \nOTHER ACTIVITIES: The park has awesome hikes\, petroglyph panels\, arches\, technical canyoneering\, visitor’s center and scenic drives!

SUMMARY:UBERFest: Las Vegas 2017
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest: Las Vegas 2017\nWho wants to go to Nevada for some Fall canyoneering?!\nUber Adventures is proud to be offering an UBERFest in a new location… Lake Mead National Recreation Area.  We have been working closely with the park and are very excited to add this location and event to our community offerings.  This is another reason why we are America’s Premier Canyoneering Instruction\, Events and Community! \nIn our commitment to keeping our community trained and well-practiced\, we are requiring everyone who wishes to attend this UBERFest to sign-up for the KNOTS\, BENDS and HITCHES workshop that will take place near our campsites\, at the Boulder Beach Picnic Area (space permitting). \nIf you wish to attend this event\, please add yourself to the waitlist and once you’ve committed to the KNOTS\, BENDS and HITCHES workshop\, we will bump your RSVP into ‘attending’. \nhttps://www.meetup.com/canyoneering/events/243723136/ \nLake Mead NRA is near many canyoneering opportunities with a variety of exciting and unique features.  If the canyons which drop into the Colorado River from both the Arizona and Nevada side (some with hot springs; some with pack rafting; some with required ascending) aren’t hot-on-your-list or if you’ve already done them\, we are near enough Red Rock National Conservation Area that if you get an early start you could consider adding those to your options.  If you’re in need of the beta book for all the Las Vegas Canyons\, you can find it at the UberAdventures.net store. \nAs with all UBERFests\, there will be people from all over the country attending and looking to descend canyons (or do hikes and hot springs) with new friends and acquaintances.  In order to facilitate some camaraderie\, each evening\, we will help you find some awesome peeps to make your next days’ plans with.  But\, remember\, everybody should be prepared to organize a canyon or two … without everyone pitching in for the logistics and planning\, there may not be enough activities to include everyone!  So\, participate wholly! \nAnd\, as with all UBERFests\, you must have the relevant training(or significant canyoneering experience) to attend this event.  There are SEVERAL relevant courses being offered across America (like the ones from UBER Adventures)\, but courses from Arizona Mountaineering School\, Into the Wild\, Zion Rock and some ACA Courses like ‘Ground School’\, Introduction to Canyoneering and ART of canyoneering are NOT recognized/sufficient.  If you have a question about your training or ability to participate\, please contact me. \nSince this UBERFest is being held over the Thanksgiving Holiday\, Thursday evening everyone is invited to my nearby home for a potluck thanksgiving dinner!  You’ll need to bring a hot side dish\, salad\, beverage or desert (I’ll create a sign-up sheet) .. and walk it over to my home\, along with your camp chair\, for a potluck dinner on my porch. \nSave the date; sign-up on the waitlist; RSVP to the Knots Bends & Hitches workshop\, and prepare to spend an awesome holiday with like-minded peeps! \nKlaus \nP.S.  UBERAdventures & Klaus Gerhart have secured $650 worth of campsites for this event\, and while we can accommodate 40+ people\, our limiting factor will be the number of vehicles that fit at the group sites (20 total).  There is some overflow parking a couple hundred feet away\, but don’t hesitate to work out a carpool! \n  \n  \nThere are several Uber Adventures 3-Day Technical Canyoneering Courses (ACE-L1) offered between now and this event.  If you want to go to this event\, get the training and become a competent participant and valuable team member! \nCAMPING: I’ve reserved a couple of group campsites within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area (details will be provided to participants as the event approaches).  This campsite has water\, fire rings\, picnic tables\, and restrooms! \nCARPOOL!  DO IT!  It’s 4+ hours away from Los Angeles.  Two-three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and shuttling to the canyons… and the fact that we are EXTREMELY restricted on parking at the campground. \n

WOOHOO!!  Permits are not required for recreational canyoneering in the park. There are a variety of options for canyoneering from easy 2-hour canyons to full-day wet advanced canyons with significant challenges! Here’s a link to get you started:  http://bluugnome.com/canyoneer_tripreport_list_capitol-reef_uth.aspx (nb: measure your ropes; some of the canyons have drops of exactly 200′ and a 200′ rope eventually shrinks to 180′ .. don’t come up short!) \n \nOTHER ACTIVITIES: The park has awesome hikes\, petroglyph panels\, arches\, technical canyoneering\, visitor’s center and scenic drives! \nP.S.  Feel free to bring someone\, however\, if your +1 hasn’t taken the Uber Adventures 3-day Technical Canyoneering Course (ACE-L1) they need my approval.

DESCRIPTION:UBERFest:  Arizona 2016\nWho wants to go to Arizona for some real (wet) canyoneering?! \nThe only fee for this trip is a $30/person non-refundable fee which includes camping.   Because canyoneering is inherently dangerous\, this event is ONLY open to people with professional canyoneering training by UBER Adventures\, an approved alternate training\, or significant canyoneering experience!  Because this event is a social activity\, we will need some people willing to lead rookies through some awesome\, wet\, yet friendly\, canyons! \n \nIf you want to go to this event … get the training and become a competent participant and valuable team member! \nSome of the logistics:  We’ve reserved a large group campsite near Globe\, AZ.  It will hold 100 people (though fewer cars)!  This campsite has water\, fire rings\, covered pavilion/picnic area\, restrooms and showers! \nCARPOOL!  DO IT!  Two people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and the fact that there will likely be car shuttles required for some of the canyons. \nYou’re also responsible for your own travel\, and your own meals … except!…  Klaus\, Jason & any other volunteers we have will help cook quesadillas and a taco bar on Saturday evening at 6:30pm.  Everything besides these dishes should be contributed ‘POTLUCK style’!  Keep the contributions of a Mexican theme and bring your sombrero!  Let’s make it a party\, as well as a meal!  (Maybe we should call this one UBERFiesta!)  So\, bring things like chips\, salsa\, beans\, rice\, flan\, Dos Equis\, Corona .. etc!  Don’t forget to bring a means to heat-and-serve-and clean your dish. Also\, you are responsible to provide your own plate\, cup\, spoon\, knife\, fork .. etc. \nThese are some of the canyons you should try to find beta for:  Barnhardt\, Big Kahuna\, Waterslides\, Parker\, The Jug of Salome Creek\, Punchbowl\, ZigZag\, Minnow\, Christopher Creek\, ETC!  MOST of these canyons will require a wetsuit as the water will be frigid\, even if the weather is not! SUMMARY:UBERFest: Vegas 2015
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest:  Vegas 2015!!\nWho wants to go to Las Vegas for some canyoneering?! \nThe only fee for this 4-day canyoneering extravaganza is a $30/person non-refundable cost-sharing fee which includes camping at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s Group Campground … and a location off-site for showers … woohoo!! (Please carpool as parking is our limiting factor!)  As canyoneering is an inherently dangerous activity\, this event is only open to those with professional canyoneering training or significant canyoneering experience.  And\, as this is a social event\, anyone competent/qualified to lead a canyon should plan on helping to lead rookies through some awesome\, canyons! \nIf you want to go to this event (or any UBERFest) … get the required Uber Adventures training and become a competent participant and valuable team member!  \nCAMPING: I’ve reserved group campsites in Lake Mead NRA\, NV.  The group campground is for tent camping only with limited vehicle parking. Group campground accommodations include water\, a common area restroom\, picnic tables\, fire pit and limited shaded areas.  We can accommodate about 60 people/tents\, but only half as many cars! \nWEATHER: Highs in the 50’s-60’s and lows in the 40’s … this is the perfect time of year to explore this part of Vegas Canyoneering … when it’s cool enough to enjoy the hot springs! \nCARPOOL:  DO IT!  It’s 5 hours away from LA. 2-3 people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and shuttling to the canyons. Also\, it is likely that you will be doing some of your canyoneering with your carpool mate since you are sharing transportation. Many of the roads to the canyons in this area require high clearance or 4×4 .. when you are making your choices for drivers\, please keep that in mind! \nYou are responsible for your own travel\, and your own meals …except!…  we will absolutely DO A POTLUCK  at 6:00pm on Saturday evening … picnic-type food!  i.e.: pasta salad\, burgers\, sausages\, potato salad\, cole slaw\, hot dogs\, buns\, chips\, salsa\, salads\, beer\, wine\, jello\, …your family favorite!  Please do not plan on bringing dessert unless you are baking it yourself .. Plan on bringing a main course\, salad or side dish to feed 4-6 people (not enough to feed an army .. that’s not necessary!)\, and the means with which to cook/heat it up/serve it … if required. Also\, you are responsible to provide your own plate\, cup\, spoon\, knife\, fork .. etc. \nCANYONEERING: We are camping near the ‘Black Canyon’ canyoneering region of Las Vegas\, NOT the Red Rocks Region.  Some of these canyons have hot springs\, small waterfalls\, a lot of them end at the Colorado River and some require a short packraft either up or down stream in order to exit.  In addition to the Canyoneering\, there are awesome hikes to hot springs\, kayak rentals from Willow Beach\, tours of the Hoover Dam\, and a crappy casino not far from camp (if you like that sort of thing!)  For those of you who need beta for the 17 technical and non-technical hikes in the Black Canyon region\, I have for sale the new book — Las Vegas Slots: A Guide to Canyoneering in Southern Nevada … pick one up from the Uber Adventures store in Chatsworth or give me a shout and I can mail you one ($24.95 + tax & S&H)! \nDIRECTIONS TO THE CAMPSITE: Will be provided to participants. \n–Sign-up Here! —

SUMMARY:UBERFest: North Wash 2015
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest: North Wash 2015\nWho wants to go to Hanksville to do some awesome Utah canyons!? \nThe area around Hanksville is riddled with canyoneering opportunities:  The Irish skinnies (Lucky Charms\, Blarney’s\, Shillelagh\, Leprechauns\, Shenanigans)\, the Hogs (Boss Hog\, Hogwarts\, Merry Piglet\, Miss Piggy\, Razorback)\, the Poison Springs (Arscenic\, Constrychnine\, Monoxide\, Slideanide)\, Maidenwater\, Fooling Around\, the Black Hole of White Canyon (if you like long\, dark\, deep\, cold swims … AND I DO!)\, Morocco\, and Woody (a canyon with multiple pothole escapes!) \n \nYou MUST be a graduate of an UBER Adventures canyoneering course to participate on this event (in addition to those who are already approved to attend our events).  If you are not sure how this requirement affects you\, please drop me a note before you sign-up!  There are several Uber Adventures 3-day Technical Canyoneering Courses/Advanced Courses/Leader Courses/Rescue Courses between now and October.  Get the training if you’d like to join! \nTrain Hard – Plan Well – Be Safe … and HAVE FUN!\n \nLOCATION:  Hanksville\, UT is an 11 hour drive from Los Angeles (plus a 1-hour time change).  All of the canyons I’ve done in the area are loops or lollipops … I don’t recall needing a car shuttle for any of them.  So Carpool! \nCAMPING/LODGING:  We’re staying at a commercial campground in Hanksville\, UT\, and I’ve reserved an enormous grassy group area for us and our tents.  There are very few picnic tables and I don’t recall much in the way of BBQ’s .. so if you can bring a folding table and camp chairs\, you should!  You are not permitted to sleep in your vehicle as it is a shared parking area.  If you are bringing an RV or Trailer\, please make your own reservation at:  Duke’s \nThis commercial campground is located in the middle of Hanksville and has showers and a restaurant.  Hanksville also has Stan’s Burger Shack (awesome!)\, gas stations and cel service! \nMost other rendezvous’ camp a half hour away at the SandThrax campground (which is free and closer to the canyons)\, but there’s no cel service\, no water\, no toilets\, no reservations\, no picnic tables\, deep sand ingress and it’s in a floodable area with a serious noseeum problem.  So\, we’re camping like Angelenos .. showers\, accessible and connected! \nWeather:  Average Highs in the 70’s and Lows in the 30’s \n– Sign-up HERE! –\n

SUMMARY:UBERFest: Zion 2015
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest:  Zion 2015  (Sorry …this event is full)\nWho wants to go to Zion for some real UTAH canyoneering?! \nThis is a cost-sharing trip … the $30 being collected for this event is a deposit to cover the cost of a group campsite\, permit applications and actual permits.  Here’s how it works:  1)  If you choose to camp in the group campsite\, approximately $10-$15 will be deducted from your $30 deposit.  2)  The group cost of permit applications\, used permits and unused permits average about $5/person/canyon.  If you join on somebody else’s permit\, approximately $5 will be paid from your deposit to the permit holder.  If you are the applicant\, you will receive approximately $5/application from this fund.  If you are the permit-holder\, you will be reimbursed for your actual expenditures from the collected deposits.  If you sign-up for the trip and cannot attend\, you will forfeit your $30 deposit as a cancellation fee.  If your incurred fees are not covered by the $30\, we will let you know after the event and you can pay the balance.  If your incurred fees do not add-up to $30\, you can request a refund or donate it to the Canyoneering California Meetup Group to pay for its monthly dues.  So\, there is no fee for this trip\, just a deposit!  This event is only open to professionally trained canyoneers (must have taken a 3-day Technical Canyoneering Course from a reputable organization) and to canyoneers with SIGNIFICANT CANYONEERING EXPERIENCE (since this is subjective\, if you’d like to attend\, please submit a request including your ‘significant’ canyoneering experience to the event organizer for approval.)  The participants in this event will have the gamut of experience from trained canyoneers doing their first Utah canyons … to experienced canyoneers who will be asked to open their trips to accommodate some of our newest graduates/rookies\, and take them through some awesome\, yet friendly\, canyons! \nThere are several Canyoneering Courses offered between now and this event.  If you wanna go … get the required training and become a competent participant and valuable team member! \nSome of the logistics:\nTHE GROUP CAMPSITE:  I’m providing a large group campsite which will hold 20-40 people\, but cars will NOT be allowed to park at the group campsite. \nIf the group campsite fills-up or if you want your own campsite\, try to get one close to Group Site 001\, and share it with your carpool-mate or another car!  If this is your choice\, you’ll be responsible for making (and paying for) your own camping arrangements at the Watchman Campground in Zion NP.  Pay attention to the recreation.gov site for when campsites are open for reservations (I think it’s 3 months in advance).  ALSO\, DO NOT get another group campsite at the Watchman … it is against the rules for 2 group campsites to be reserved by people affiliated with each other. \nCARPOOL!  DO IT!  It’s 7 hours away from LA. Two-three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and the fact that there will likely be car shuttles required for some of the canyons. \nYou’re also responsible for the park entry fee\, your own travel\, and your own meals .. except!…  we will absolutely DO A POTLUCK  at 6:30pm on Saturday evening … picnic-type food!  i.e.: pasta salad\, burgers\, sausages\, potato salad\, cole slaw\, hot dogs\, buns\, chips\, salsa\, salads\, beer\, wine\, jello\, …your family favorite!  Please do not plan on bringing dessert unless you are baking it yourself .. Plan on bringing a main course\, salad or side dish to feed 4-6 people (not enough to feed an army .. that’s not necessary!)\, and the means with which to cook/heat it up/serve it … if required. Also\, you are responsible to provide your own plate\, cup\, spoon\, knife\, fork .. etc. \nEveryone should try to get permits for something (the more we apply for\, the more likely we will have options for everyone!)  Plan on getting permits for 6-12 people (depending on the canyon)\, otherwise it’s difficult to split up into tiny groups.  For days that we have no permits\, there are several canyons surrounding the park that we can descend with no permit required.  These are some of the canyons you should try to get permits for (READ THE BETA before you apply!):  Subway (try to get 8-12 permits)\, Das Boot\, Pine Creek\, Keyhole\, Middle Echo\, Spry\, Mystery\, Behunin\, Telephone\, Lower Refrigerator\, Englestead\, Orderville … wooohooo!! … several of these require wetsuits which can be reserved and rented (along with Canyoneering shoes) from Zion Adventure Company. http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/canyoneeringpermits.htm (Once you are awarded any permit\, please DO NOT POST THEM ON HERE!).  Send me a private e-mail and I will help distribute people appropriately\, and/or we will have sign-up sheets at the group campsite.
