SUMMARY:UBERFest: Vegas 2015
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest:  Vegas 2015!!\nWho wants to go to Las Vegas for some canyoneering?! \nThe only fee for this 4-day canyoneering extravaganza is a $30/person non-refundable cost-sharing fee which includes camping at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s Group Campground … and a location off-site for showers … woohoo!! (Please carpool as parking is our limiting factor!)  As canyoneering is an inherently dangerous activity\, this event is only open to those with professional canyoneering training or significant canyoneering experience.  And\, as this is a social event\, anyone competent/qualified to lead a canyon should plan on helping to lead rookies through some awesome\, canyons! \nIf you want to go to this event (or any UBERFest) … get the required Uber Adventures training and become a competent participant and valuable team member!  \nCAMPING: I’ve reserved group campsites in Lake Mead NRA\, NV.  The group campground is for tent camping only with limited vehicle parking. Group campground accommodations include water\, a common area restroom\, picnic tables\, fire pit and limited shaded areas.  We can accommodate about 60 people/tents\, but only half as many cars! \nWEATHER: Highs in the 50’s-60’s and lows in the 40’s … this is the perfect time of year to explore this part of Vegas Canyoneering … when it’s cool enough to enjoy the hot springs! \nCARPOOL:  DO IT!  It’s 5 hours away from LA. 2-3 people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and shuttling to the canyons. Also\, it is likely that you will be doing some of your canyoneering with your carpool mate since you are sharing transportation. Many of the roads to the canyons in this area require high clearance or 4×4 .. when you are making your choices for drivers\, please keep that in mind! \nYou are responsible for your own travel\, and your own meals …except!…  we will absolutely DO A POTLUCK  at 6:00pm on Saturday evening … picnic-type food!  i.e.: pasta salad\, burgers\, sausages\, potato salad\, cole slaw\, hot dogs\, buns\, chips\, salsa\, salads\, beer\, wine\, jello\, …your family favorite!  Please do not plan on bringing dessert unless you are baking it yourself .. Plan on bringing a main course\, salad or side dish to feed 4-6 people (not enough to feed an army .. that’s not necessary!)\, and the means with which to cook/heat it up/serve it … if required. Also\, you are responsible to provide your own plate\, cup\, spoon\, knife\, fork .. etc. \nCANYONEERING: We are camping near the ‘Black Canyon’ canyoneering region of Las Vegas\, NOT the Red Rocks Region.  Some of these canyons have hot springs\, small waterfalls\, a lot of them end at the Colorado River and some require a short packraft either up or down stream in order to exit.  In addition to the Canyoneering\, there are awesome hikes to hot springs\, kayak rentals from Willow Beach\, tours of the Hoover Dam\, and a crappy casino not far from camp (if you like that sort of thing!)  For those of you who need beta for the 17 technical and non-technical hikes in the Black Canyon region\, I have for sale the new book — Las Vegas Slots: A Guide to Canyoneering in Southern Nevada … pick one up from the Uber Adventures store in Chatsworth or give me a shout and I can mail you one ($24.95 + tax & S&H)! \nDIRECTIONS TO THE CAMPSITE: Will be provided to participants. \n–Sign-up Here! —

This class will\, however\, provide you with an introduction to rappelling\, safety checks\, communication and bottom belays that can make taking the full course more beneficial. \nWe will spend the whole day rappelling at Stoney Point in Chatsworth. \nSingle strand on 8.3mm and 9.2mm static canyoneering ropes! \nWe will also bring a couple of descenders for you to try:  Piranas and Figure 8’s. \nThat’s all we’re going to do … all day. So … \n\nIf you don’t know how to rappel .. come learn.\nIf you want to try out different descenders and ropes .. come experiment.\nIf you know how to rappel .. come practice.\n\nThis Learn to Rappel Class will last all day .. 7am-3:30pm so bring lunch &water!  You will be required to sign a release of liability and assumption of risk. You may participate all day or for a few hours … it’s YOUR day. \nGear for this class will be provided (however\, if you have a climbing harness\, any kind of helmet [climbing\, bicycling\, kayaking\, snow boarding\, etc]\, a pair of gloves [mechanics\, cycling\, weightlifting\, garden\, etc.] … please bring your own!)  And feel free to bring any gear you have questions about … we’re happy to show you how to use your own descender and to answer any/all gear questions. \nWe will be scrambling around a lot as we rappel\, scramble back up\, rappel\, scramble back up\, rappel\, scramble back up\, etc. ….so wear some comfortable shoes with good ‘grip’ .. trail\, running\, approach shoes all work well (don’t wear rock climbing shoes). Bring sunscreen\, sunglasses\, maybe a hat\, and clothes/layers appropriate for the forecast. \nThis Learn to Rappel Class is open to everyone .. so invite your friends\, your teenage kids\, your spouse to join!  If you’d like to organize a private event for your students\, colleagues\, friends or for a family reunion\, just give us a shout!  This event also is a tremendous team-building activity! \nThe cost for this class is only $40 per person!!  The $40 is non-refundable but may be put toward a future rappelling class in the same calendar year if 30 days notice are given cancelling your participation on this date.  Read more company/course policies here. \nEvent Host/Organizer:  Klaus Gerhart         Instructors:  Collin Goebel\, Francisco Camberos \n________________________ \nWhat people are saying about this class: \n“What a fabulous day! Great group of people and awesome instructor! You have got to meet Klaus! If you haven’t tried this\, you’re missing out. Klaus is all about safety first\, but teaches in a way that makes you count the seconds to rappel and canyoneer! I’d rate this as a 15 out of 10! Can’t wait to see what else he’s cooking up. Thanks to Jason for his assistance!”  -C- (Carmen B 2/2/13) \n“Best Meetup I’ve ever been to.  What a great group of people .. Klaus encourages us all to support one another and we learned how to care for each others’ safety!  I look forward to more adventure and instruction!  Thanks Klaus\, I loved every minute of it.”  -Lynda- \n“Had a blast!  Met very cool people.  Klaus is a great instructor\, super supportive and his assistant(s) are knowledgeable and patient!  Can’t wait to do it again.”  -Aurora-

DESCRIPTION:UBERFest: North Wash 2015\nWho wants to go to Hanksville to do some awesome Utah canyons!? \nThe area around Hanksville is riddled with canyoneering opportunities:  The Irish skinnies (Lucky Charms\, Blarney’s\, Shillelagh\, Leprechauns\, Shenanigans)\, the Hogs (Boss Hog\, Hogwarts\, Merry Piglet\, Miss Piggy\, Razorback)\, the Poison Springs (Arscenic\, Constrychnine\, Monoxide\, Slideanide)\, Maidenwater\, Fooling Around\, the Black Hole of White Canyon (if you like long\, dark\, deep\, cold swims … AND I DO!)\, Morocco\, and Woody (a canyon with multiple pothole escapes!) \n \nYou MUST be a graduate of an UBER Adventures canyoneering course to participate on this event (in addition to those who are already approved to attend our events).  If you are not sure how this requirement affects you\, please drop me a note before you sign-up!  There are several Uber Adventures 3-day Technical Canyoneering Courses/Advanced Courses/Leader Courses/Rescue Courses between now and October.  Get the training if you’d like to join! \nTrain Hard – Plan Well – Be Safe … and HAVE FUN!\n \nLOCATION:  Hanksville\, UT is an 11 hour drive from Los Angeles (plus a 1-hour time change).  All of the canyons I’ve done in the area are loops or lollipops … I don’t recall needing a car shuttle for any of them.  So Carpool! \nCAMPING/LODGING:  We’re staying at a commercial campground in Hanksville\, UT\, and I’ve reserved an enormous grassy group area for us and our tents.  There are very few picnic tables and I don’t recall much in the way of BBQ’s .. so if you can bring a folding table and camp chairs\, you should!  You are not permitted to sleep in your vehicle as it is a shared parking area.  If you are bringing an RV or Trailer\, please make your own reservation at:  Duke’s \nThis commercial campground is located in the middle of Hanksville and has showers and a restaurant.  Hanksville also has Stan’s Burger Shack (awesome!)\, gas stations and cel service! \nMost other rendezvous’ camp a half hour away at the SandThrax campground (which is free and closer to the canyons)\, but there’s no cel service\, no water\, no toilets\, no reservations\, no picnic tables\, deep sand ingress and it’s in a floodable area with a serious noseeum problem.  So\, we’re camping like Angelenos .. showers\, accessible and connected! \nWeather:  Average Highs in the 70’s and Lows in the 30’s \n– Sign-up HERE! –\n

SUMMARY:Canyon Rescue Course (L4) ... Moab\, UT
DESCRIPTION:Canyon Rescue Course (L4) …Moab\, UT!  (This class is full\, please see other dates)\nTrain Hard.  Plan Well.  Be Safe.\n                                                    …but accidents still happen.\nThis Canyon Rescue Course by Uber Adventures teaches the skills necessary to perform immediate\, in-canyon self-rescues\, partner rescues\, and how to assist with group emergencies … all with your groups’ normal rack-and-pack (the minimal gear you should carry on your harnesses and in your packs.) \nBoost your confidence and fill your mental toolbox with skills to handle technical emergencies. \nThis course not only teaches you the skills and methods necessary to execute a variety of rescue procedures\, but it provides the impetus for critical thinking through an emergency. \nHow would you help a canyoneer stuck on a rope?  How would you help an unconscious canyoneer stuck on a rope?  How quickly could you figure out how to convert a static block to a lowering system?  Could you haul a rappeller back to the top of a drop by yourself?  Have you ever been in a canyon\, assessing a fictional problem and felt helpless?  Are your responsibilities in a canyoneering event greater because you’re the leader/organizer?  Would you like to be a more valuable team member?  This course is vital for not only canyoneering leaders\, but also for conscientious recreational canyoneers who value their own safety and the safety of their party. \nWith the technical skills presented in this course\, you could prevent the need for calling in an expensive Search And Rescue team\, avoid putting rescuers at risk\, avoid spending the night in a canyon\, and continue a canyon descent with a non-critically injured teammate. \nPrerequisite:  Participants should have some advanced formal canyoneering-specific training.  This course builds on the skills taught in the Uber Adventures’ 3-day Technical Canyoneering Course (L1)\, the Advanced Canyoneering Course (L2) AND the Canyon Management Course (L3).  While we are not requiring the completion of each of those courses as a prerequisite\, those who have had advanced formal canyoneering training will find it easier to ‘keep-up’ with this curriculum.  If you’re not sure if this is the course for you\, please give us a call and we can discuss your skills and training. \nThe topics and skills covered will include: \n\nKnots\, Rope Grabs & Progress Capture Methods\nAnchors\, Rigging & Friction Dynamics for Rescue\nMechanical Advantage and Haul Systems\nConverting Static Rigging to Haul or Lower\nAssisted Rappel & Tandem Rappel Techniques\nHero Rescue\, Balancier Lift\nRappelling on a Tensioned Rope\nGuide Ropes\, Tag Lines\, Belays\nCut-and-Lower Procedures\nSpecial Ascending Techniques for Rescue\nPick-Off Procedures Scenario\nConsiderations for musculoskeletal injuries\n\nInstructor: Klaus Gerhart\, Steve Morga\nACA & ACGA Certified Guides and Instructors \n \nRead company/course policies here.

DESCRIPTION:Canyon Rescue Course (L4)\nTrain Hard. \nThe topics and skills covered will include: \n\nKnots\, Rope Grabs & Progress Capture Methods\nAnchors\, Rigging & Friction Dynamics for Rescue\nMechanical Advantage and Haul Systems\nConverting Static Rigging to Haul or Lower\nAssisted Rappel & Tandem Rappel Techniques\nHero Rescue\, Balancier Lift\nRappelling on a Tensioned Rope\nGuide Ropes\, Tag Lines\, Belays\nCut-and-Lower Procedures\nSpecial Ascending Techniques for Rescue\nPick-Off Procedures Scenario\nConsiderations for musculoskeletal injuries\n\nInstructor: Klaus Gerhart\nACA & ACGA Certified Guide and Instructor \n \nRead company/course policies here. \n

DESCRIPTION:UBERFest:  Zion 2015  (Sorry …this event is full)\nWho wants to go to Zion for some real UTAH canyoneering?! \nThis is a cost-sharing trip … the $30 being collected for this event is a deposit to cover the cost of a group campsite\, permit applications and actual permits.  Here’s how it works:  1)  If you choose to camp in the group campsite\, approximately $10-$15 will be deducted from your $30 deposit.  2)  The group cost of permit applications\, used permits and unused permits average about $5/person/canyon.  If you join on somebody else’s permit\, approximately $5 will be paid from your deposit to the permit holder.  If you are the applicant\, you will receive approximately $5/application from this fund.  If you are the permit-holder\, you will be reimbursed for your actual expenditures from the collected deposits.  If you sign-up for the trip and cannot attend\, you will forfeit your $30 deposit as a cancellation fee.  If your incurred fees are not covered by the $30\, we will let you know after the event and you can pay the balance.  If your incurred fees do not add-up to $30\, you can request a refund or donate it to the Canyoneering California Meetup Group to pay for its monthly dues.  So\, there is no fee for this trip\, just a deposit!  This event is only open to professionally trained canyoneers (must have taken a 3-day Technical Canyoneering Course from a reputable organization) and to canyoneers with SIGNIFICANT CANYONEERING EXPERIENCE (since this is subjective\, if you’d like to attend\, please submit a request including your ‘significant’ canyoneering experience to the event organizer for approval.)  The participants in this event will have the gamut of experience from trained canyoneers doing their first Utah canyons … to experienced canyoneers who will be asked to open their trips to accommodate some of our newest graduates/rookies\, and take them through some awesome\, yet friendly\, canyons! \nThere are several Canyoneering Courses offered between now and this event.  If you wanna go … get the required training and become a competent participant and valuable team member! \nSome of the logistics:\nTHE GROUP CAMPSITE:  I’m providing a large group campsite which will hold 20-40 people\, but cars will NOT be allowed to park at the group campsite.  The parking spaces will be empty and available for picking-up/dropping-off your ride-sharing canyoneers and gear.  ALL cars will need to be parked in overflow parking or at the visitor’s center\, which is a 3 minute walk away!  The Group Campsite will also lend itself for all group activities including facilitating canyon changes\, gathering for ride-sharing\, meals\, the potluck\, games and especially\, CAMARADERIE!  Because we will always want to get a super early start for our canyons and morning shuttles\, our evenings at the group campsite will end early so people can get their sleep. \nIf the group campsite fills-up or if you want your own campsite\, try to get one close to Group Site 001\, and share it with your carpool-mate or another car!  If this is your choice\, you’ll be responsible for making (and paying for) your own camping arrangements at the Watchman Campground in Zion NP.  Pay attention to the recreation.gov site for when campsites are open for reservations (I think it’s 3 months in advance).  ALSO\, DO NOT get another group campsite at the Watchman … it is against the rules for 2 group campsites to be reserved by people affiliated with each other. \nCARPOOL!  DO IT!  It’s 7 hours away from LA. Two-three people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and the fact that there will likely be car shuttles required for some of the canyons. \nYou’re also responsible for the park entry fee\, your own travel\, and your own meals .. except!…  we will absolutely DO A POTLUCK  at 6:30pm on Saturday evening … picnic-type food!  i.e.: pasta salad\, burgers\, sausages\, potato salad\, cole slaw\, hot dogs\, buns\, chips\, salsa\, salads\, beer\, wine\, jello\, …your family favorite!  Please do not plan on bringing dessert unless you are baking it yourself .. Plan on bringing a main course\, salad or side dish to feed 4-6 people (not enough to feed an army .. that’s not necessary!)\, and the means with which to cook/heat it up/serve it … if required. Also\, you are responsible to provide your own plate\, cup\, spoon\, knife\, fork .. etc. \nEveryone should try to get permits for something (the more we apply for\, the more likely we will have options for everyone!)  Plan on getting permits for 6-12 people (depending on the canyon)\, otherwise it’s difficult to split up into tiny groups.  For days that we have no permits\, there are several canyons surrounding the park that we can descend with no permit required.  These are some of the canyons you should try to get permits for (READ THE BETA before you apply!):  Subway (try to get 8-12 permits)\, Das Boot\, Pine Creek\, Keyhole\, Middle Echo\, Spry\, Mystery\, Behunin\, Telephone\, Lower Refrigerator\, Englestead\, Orderville … wooohooo!! … several of these require wetsuits which can be reserved and rented (along with Canyoneering shoes) from Zion Adventure Company. http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/canyoneeringpermits.htm (Once you are awarded any permit\, please DO NOT POST THEM ON HERE!).  Send me a private e-mail and I will help distribute people appropriately\, and/or we will have sign-up sheets at the group campsite.

SUMMARY:Canyon Rescue Course (L4)
DESCRIPTION:Canyon Rescue Course\nTrain Hard. This course builds on the skills taught in the Uber Adventures’ 3-day Technical Canyoneering Course AND the Advanced Canyoneering Course AND the Level 3 Skills/Leader Course.  While we are not requiring the completion of each of those courses as a prerequisite\, those who have had advanced formal canyoneering training will find it easier to ‘keep-up’ with this curriculum.  If you’re not sure if this is the course for you\, please give us a call and we can discuss your skills and training. \nThe topics and skills covered will include: \n\nKnots\, Rope Grabs & Progress Capture Methods\nAnchors\, Rigging & Friction Dynamics for Rescue\nMechanical Advantage and Haul Systems\nConverting Static Rigging to Haul or Lower\nAssisted Rappel & Tandem Rappel Techniques\nHero Rescue\, Balancier Lift\nRappelling on a Tensioned Rope\nGuide Ropes\, Tag Lines\, Belays\nCut-and-Lower Procedures\nSpecial Ascending Techniques for Rescue\nPick-Off Procedures Scenario\nConsiderations for musculoskeletal injuries\n\nInstructor: Klaus Gerhart\nACGA Certified Guide\, Officer and Instructor\, Certified Tactical Rappel Master\, Wilderness First Responder\, Advanced Swiftwater Rescue Technician\, Technical Rope Rescue Technician\, Map & Compass Navigation Instructor\, trained Whitewater Rafting Guide\, former Basic Mountaineering Instructor for Sierra Club’s Wilderness Travel Course\, and a Master Educator for Leave No Trace wilderness ethics. \nRead company/course policies here.

SUMMARY:UBERFest: Arizona 2015
DESCRIPTION:UBERFest:  Arizona 2015\nWho wants to go to Arizona for some real (wet) canyoneering?! \nThe only fee for this trip is a $30/person non-refundable cost-sharing fee which includes camping.   Because canyoneering is inherently dangerous\, this event is ONLY open to people with professional canyoneering training or significant canyoneering experience!  Because this event is a social activity\, we will need some people willing to lead rookies through some awesome\, wet\, yet friendly\, canyons! \n \nIf you want to go to this event … get the training and become a competent participant and valuable team member! \nSome of the logistics:  I’ve reserved a large group campsite near Globe\, AZ.  It will hold 100 people (though fewer cars)!  This campsite has water\, fire rings\, covered pavilion/picnic area\, restrooms and showers! \nCARPOOL!  DO IT!  It’s 7 hours away from LA. Two people to a car would be reasonable when you consider camping gear\, coolers\, canyoneering gear and the fact that there will likely be car shuttles required for some of the canyons. \nYou’re also responsible for your own travel\, and your own meals … except!…  we will absolutely DO A POTLUCK  at 6:30pm on Saturday evening … picnic-type food!     i.e.: pasta salad\, burgers\, sausages\, potato salad\, cole slaw\, hot dogs\, buns\, chips\, salsa\, salads\, beer\, wine\, jello\, …your family favorite!  Please do not plan on bringing dessert unless you are baking it yourself .. Plan on bringing a main course\, salad or side dish to feed 4-6 people (not enough to feed an army .. that’s not necessary!)\, and the means with which to cook/heat it up/serve it … if required. Also\, you are responsible to provide your own plate\, cup\, spoon\, knife\, fork .. etc. \nThese are some of the canyons you should try to find beta for:  Barnhardt\, Big Kahuna\, Waterslides\, Parker\, The Jug of Salome Creek\, Punchbowl\, ZigZag\, Minnow\, Christopher Creek\, ETC!  MOST of these canyons will require a wetsuit as the water will be frigid\, even if the weather is not! (think melting snow runoff)  If you’re going to rent one\, get a 4/3 and wear a rain shell over the top to keep the wind from evaporative-cooling you.  (Leaders:  PLEASE DON’T POST YOUR PLANNED CANYONS ON HERE\, but keep me in the loop of your plans!  We will have sign-up sheets at the campsite.) \nDIRECTIONS TO THE CAMPSITE: The campsite is approximately 8.5 miles south of Theodore Roosevelt Dam.  From I-10\, east of Phoenix\, take State Hwy 87/Beeline Highway north for about 60 miles to its junction with State Hwy 188.  Turn right and follow State Hwy 188 for 33 miles to its junction with State Hwy 88.  CONTINUE ON HWY 188 for another 7.5 miles to Forest Road (FR) 84/Grapevine Group Site. Turn left onto FR84 for 2 miles to the site .. our Loop is called:  COOT. \nP.S.  I’m limiting the RSVP’s to +1 … if your +1 hasn’t taken a 3-day basic Technical Canyoneering Course or doesn’t have SIGNIFICANT CANYONEERING EXPERIENCE\, they need my permission or should not be attending. \n– Sign-Up Here! –
